Description of Admissions Requirements
Baccalaureate Programs: THE UTEACH PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE/SECONDARY LICENSURE IN Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Technology/Engineering)
Students majoring in STEM subjects begin taking UTeach courses in their freshman year in order to explore teaching as a career. They do not declare their candidacy until the junior year or until taking UTL 202 Interactions and Equity (whichever is earliest).
Students must maintain a 2.7 GPA in their STEM field and have displayed appropriate dispositions to be admitted as a teacher candidate.
Post-baccalaureate Programs: MIDDLE/SECONDARY LICENSURE PROGRAMS Successful applicants must have an undergraduate degree or a minimum number of credits in the specialization field in which they are seeking licensure as follows: Biology 36 credits in biology Chemistry 36 credits in chemistry Physics 36 credits in physics Earth Sc. 36 credits in an earth science English 36 cr. in English Gen. Sc 36 cr. in a major field of science plus 18 credits in other sciences Math 36 credits in mathematics History 36 cr. in History Applicants are expected to have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in undergraduate work. Applicants must submit proof of passing the MTEL- Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (Communication and Literacy Skills and Subject Area Test are required).
ELEMENTARY & ELEMENTARY/MODERATE DISABILITIES Successful applicants must have an undergraduate major in an arts or science academic content area. In addition, the applicant must meet prerequisite requirements in: MATHEMATICS 3 courses (9 cr.) SCIENCE 2 courses (6 cr.) HISTORY 2 courses (6 cr.) ENGLISH 2 courses (6 cr.) Applicants are expected to have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in undergraduate work. Graduate School of Education` Applicants must also submit proof of passing the MTEL- Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (Communication and Literacy Skills, General Curriculum Multi Subject Test, and the General Curriculum Math Test) are required for admission.
READING SPECIALIST - Ed.S. and M.Ed. Courses are offered online with required on-campus sessions for the practicum. Successful applicants must submit proof of an initial or professional Massachusetts license in Elementary Education, English as a Second Language, Teaching Students with Moderate Disabilities or Early Childhood Education. Applicants are expected to have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in their undergraduate work.
EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION Ed.S.& M.Ed.
1.Admission statement in which the candidate clearly communicates a commitment to education as a student centered enterprise, demonstrates a record of strong instructional practice, exhibits and ability to lead professional learning, and details a strong rationale for entering a leadership program. 2.Minimum of five years PK-12 teaching experience PRIOR to admission 3.Proof of Initial Teaching License 4.Reference letter from candidate's principal attesting to the candidate's suitability for graduate study in administration. 5.Reference letter from a teaching colleague which speaks to leadership potential. 6.One other letter of reference which attests to the candidate's potential for leadership 7.Official transcripts 8.Undergraduate and/or graduate GPA of 3.0 or better 9.FOR MASSACHUSETTS TEACHERS ONLY: Proof of having passed the MTEL in Communications and Literacy 10.FOR MASSACHUSETTS TEACHERS ONLY: Completed UMass Lowell Principal's Acknowledgment Form supporting (i) the need for the candidate to engage in field-based work during the practicum which may require him/her to gain release from the classroom on occasions (ii) the intensive practicum and willingness to facilitate, mentor and support the experiences in which the candidate must engage.
