What else should you know about our school?
Worcester East Middle School and The Academy of Science, Technology, and Health serves approximately 830 middle school students from Worcesters North Quadrant. Seventy two percent of the students at Worcester East Middle School are members of an ethnic minority and 48% speak a first language other than English. Additionally, some students may have a parent or grandparent who was a former student. Each student makes a unique contribution. The Academy of Science, Technology, and Health is an Innovation school, which opened in 2011 is housed on the third floor of Worcester East Middle School. With approximately 300 students in grades 6th through 8th, the Academy focus provides students with opportunities to study the sciences, health, and technology and explore various careers in health science, animal science, and technology. Each year selected students have the opportunity to get practical experience at Tufts veterinarian school in a one week internship. Grade 8 students who desire to pursue a career in medicine have the opportunity to take a high school health course and receive high school credit. Worcester East Middle School is organized around small learning communities (teams) to support the middle school learner. Each team has its own separate identity with its own area of the building and special activities. A sustained instructional focus on active reading, critical thinking, and written response across all content areas has been at the center of the schools instructional focus. With the acquisition of new technology students are able to experience learning in such a way that they will be ready for the 21st century workplace. Worcester East Middle School and The Academy of Science, Technology, and Health provide students with the following programs and services: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes, World Language-Spanish, Algebra, and Health. Some of the after-school programs include: Robotics, Art Club, Writing Club, Intramurals and Lets Go- outdoor activities.
