Goal #1 Ongoing. The Dean, faculty and other administrators in the College of Education and Allied Studies have been actively involved in many statewide diversity initiatives including "100 males to College", the "Grow your Own" project and the Community College pipeline initiative. The community college initiative creates a dual admission support and coaching program for potential students of color, in particular those who are interested in teaching. Diversity has been added as a regular agenda item for the PDSAC. A faculty member has been provided with an APR to assist the college in its diverse candidate recruitment efforts.
Goal #2 The BSU president and administrators from the College of Education and Allied Studies have met several times with the superintendent and staff of the Fall River Public schools to develop a partnership agreement which includes establishing an educational leadership cohort and other initiatives including a leadership academy for 50 high school students in Fall River. Each department within the College of Education and Allied Studies has been tasked with the development of a certificate program based on the needs of the P-12 community. These certificate programs will include existing and newly developed courses. Faculty and staff from the College of Education and Allied Studies meet monthly with teachers and administrators in ten different professional development schools in Brockton, East Bridgewater, New Bedford, and Taunton to discuss and resolve professional development needs and other requests from PDS partners. The Bridgewater-Raynham public schools and BSU collaborated on the development of BR University, a professional development institute designed specifically to meet teacher identified PD needs. The institute is now open to educators in the BR district, East Bridgewater and Brockton. BSU is also approved by ESE to offer stand-alone SEI courses to schools and school districts who have identified SEI need. We are currently meeting this need for 3 school districts and many individual inservice educators.
Goal #3 Faculty in the College of Education and Allied Studies regularly lead study tours and service trips to countries in need around the world. The University host students and provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students from Belize to build educational capacity in that country. These initiatives are one aspect of the BSU GLOBE program (Global Learning Opportunities for BSU Educators). The GLOBE program was recently honored by American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) receiving the 2017 Global and International Perspectives Award. The College of Education and Allied Studies also serves students through the Bridge (middle school) and Footbridge (5th grade) summer programs which provide educational opportunities to inner-city, Brockton, MA youth by engaging them in an academic curriculum on the BSU campus during a two-week segment of the summer school vacation period. The BSU Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment (ICE) program provides public high school students with severe disabilities, ages 18-22, who have not passed MCAS the opportunity to participate in inclusive college courses (credit or non-credit) to increase their school and work success. 2016-17 is the first year that the ICE program was expanded to offer a college residential experience for these students. November 18, 2016 marked the first annual celebration of the United Nations Universal Children's Day Celebration at Bridgewater State University. Faculty and students from the College of Education provided presentations and workshops centered on the UN's 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. BSU hosted 300 third grade students from an inner city elementary school in Brockton at this event.
