Employment of Preparation Program Completers in Massachusetts Public Schools
This report provides the percentage of program completers who were employed in a Massachusetts public school or district by June of the report year. Employment rates are reported by program completion year, program type, program subject area, and top employing districts. Employment is determined by matching program completers reported by preparation program providers with employment data collected from districts in the Education Personnel Information Management System (EPIMS). The number in retention cohort includes the number of program completers first employed at least one year prior to the report year, and is the numerator for the retention rates. More about the data…
Note: Data only include program completers who became employed in a Massachusetts public, K-12 school, including charter schools, and collaboratives. The data do not include employment in private schools or outside of Massachusetts. Additional contextual information is provided by the educator preparation program under 'Employment Rates Context'.
A dash indicates that there were fewer than six program completers, therefore employment data is not reported. For more information on how employment and retention rates are calculated, see the About the Data page.
Employment Rates Context
[The Elms College employment information can, at first glance, be misleading, due to the following factors:
1. The statistics assume that we only prepare teachers for Massachusetts public schools, without regard for the important role we play in preparing teachers for private schools, service organizations, other states/countries and other purposes.
2. Elms College graduates small numbers in some licensure areas, which are not reported in the statistics, making it seem as if these teachers are not employed, when they are.
3. A number of our graduates, especially the baccalaureate candidates, go directly to Master's programs.
Here is some specific information that clarifies the reported statistics:
Reading- One graduate is a lawyer, specializing in advocating for children with special needs and reading issues. She completed our program to better inform her law practice. The other graduate is a literacy coordinator at a private preschool.
Baccalaureate - The biology grad teaches at Holyoke Catholic School. Two of the early childhood grads are in Master's programs, one is in the Passionlst Volunteer Corps in Jamaica, one teaches in Connecticut, and the other teaches in a Springfield parochial school. A similar situation is true of elementary education grads: one teaches in a Springfield charter school, one teaches in New Hampshire, one teaches at a Yeshiva religious school, and two are in graduate programs. In English, both graduates are in Master's programs. In ESL, the graduate teaches in Randolph. For foreign languages/Spanish, one graduate teaches in Palmer, and the other in Tennessee. In terms of history, the graduate teaches in New York, and with regard to Math, the graduate teaches in Hampshire Regional School District. Our moderate disabilities candidates all teach locally: in Westfield, Springfield, and Chicopee.
In our Post Baccalaureate program, the three biology graduates are employed in Springfield and Chicopee. Our Early Childhood graduates are employed in Chicopee, Springfield, and Agawam. Our elementary education graduates teach in Sringfield, Chicopee, Methuen, Ludlow, and a private special needs school. Our English graduates are teaching in Springfield, Chicopee, and South Hadley. Our ESL candidates are teaching in Springfield, and in the JET program in Japan. The two foreign language/Spanish graduates are teaching in Chicopee and for an online company. The Math graduate teaches in Southwick. and the moderate disabilities teachers are employed in Chicopee, Westfield, West Springfield, and Springfield. One is on a maternity leave with twins!
To our knowledge, every Elms College educator licensure graduate in this cohort who wants a teaching job, has one. We are proud of their many accomplishments, and their contributions to the education of students in Massachusetts, other states, and the world at large.
