Annual Goals

This report lists the annual improvement goals reported to ESE in the educator preparation program provider’s state annual report. Providers may report up to three goals for the upcoming year and are asked to report on progress made toward the prior year’s goals. Annual goals are reported in May of the academic year listed.
Data last updated October, 04 2023.

Annual Goals - 2022
Goal #1 Review past practice, secure funding, and develop a series of mentorship workshops/professional development series in partnership with the Campus School at Smith College with the goal of strengthening the practices of supervising practitioners as they guide our teacher candidates through fieldwork experiences.
Goal #2 Develop a companion 1-credit course to compliment our methods courses (EDC 345/352) with the goal of supporting pre-practicum CAP documentation requirements and deepen the reflective practices of teacher candidates around the connections of theory to practice.
Goal #3 Update fieldwork handbooks, refinement of advising forms, procedure and protocols to increase communication and clarity of our program of study at Smith. Refine the structure of the pre-practicum experience to ensure the support of teacher candidates enrolled in our program.

Annual Goals - 2021
Goal #1 Orient and integrate a new CTE to the department. We are hiring a permanent CTE for our organization, and a significant goal will be to orient them to the job and have them develop a workflow with faculty, students, and the state.
Goal #2 Orient and integrate three new colleagues to the department and our teacher education programs. We have designed a mentoring plan to support our new colleagues and introduce them to the MA State frameworks, practicum and subject matter knowledge standards and requirements
Goal #3 Continue to develop and refine our pre-practicum systems including the essential observations, notes, and debriefings which our program supervisors provide for our student teachers.Beyond the CAP requirements, supervisors and mentor teachers provide support that will ensure a smooth transition to the practicum.

Annual Goals - 2020
Goal #1 Shifts in faculty; including the hiring of a new CTE, as well as new requirements from DESE in regard to pre-practicum guidelines and SMK have created a wonderful opportunity for our department to look closely at our licensure program and consider how best to prepare all candidates to leave our program ready to teach on day one. In the coming year we will work to more closely align the experiences of our elementary and secondary candidates; setting a side time for department discussions and collaboration and professional development for instructors of required methods courses.
Goal #2 Develop a stronger and more accesible system (when advising needs to become a remote process) for advising and monitoring the progress of licensure candidates; which will need to include some formalizing of communication with supervising practitioners and instructors, as well as more conversation and information sharing with academic advisors.
Goal #3 With input of program supervisors and supervising practicers develop more systems for providing targeted feedback to candidates during pre-practcum experiences.
