Annual Goals

This report lists the annual improvement goals reported to ESE in the educator preparation program provider’s state annual report. Providers may report up to three goals for the upcoming year and are asked to report on progress made toward the prior year’s goals. Annual goals are reported in May of the academic year listed.

Annual Goals - 2017
Goal #1 We are piloting a new policy of requiring candidates to pass the MTEL Communication and Literacy and the ECE/ ELM subject matter tests before entering the senior year curriculum courses. Though this has been what we have strongly advised in the past, we have found that some students procrastinate, thus creating a dilemma for them and us. We realize there will always be extenuating circumstances, but we are going to experiment with implementing a more rigorous timeline.
Goal #2 We plan to improve coordination between departmental faculty, teaching foundation level courses, the center for community engagement on our campus and the Norton tutoring programs.
Goal #3 We will complete all required submissions for the MA DESE formal review of all our licensure programs (to be held Feb. 2018).

Annual Goals - 2016
Goal #1 Wheaton College Education Department will formally expand our PreK-12 Partnership Advisory Group beyond the articulation agreement with the Norton Schools, in addition to inviting partners to attend Education Advisory Group meetings when appropriate.
Goal #2 Instructors will embed CAP Essential Elements into curriculum/ prepracticum courses. We will further align instruction regarding PSTs and CAP by adding more hands-on pedagogical instruction to foundations level courses (ex.,EDU 250) and by revising the prepracticum observation assignment.
Goal #3 We will enhance our mentor training for program supervisors as well as supervising practitioners. We have planned a summer meeting for program supervisors to increase our support.

Progress Toward Goals - 2016
Goal #1 Our Partnership Advisory Group met during the year, including representatives from Norton, Plainville, Head Start, etc. We accomplished the following agreed upon goals: provided an EL prof dev. offering, enhanced our Curriculum Collection resources re EL, SPED, SEL, STEM, arranged library access for partners, hosted guest speakers regarding Behavioral Issues and Wellness, hosted a speaker regarding the need for Black Male Teachers, and started candidates earlier in their fall prepracticum/ practicum settings with a "Getting Started" workshop.
Goal #2 We hired a CAP manager who also served our programs for "Mentoring in the Schools". Candidates completed portfolios focused on the CAP 6 Essential Elements. The ECE and ELM programs piloted the online CAP program with supervising practitioners and teacher candidates. More field work opportunities were included in EDUC 250 Schooling in America.
Goal #3 We held 3 formal mentor trainings including training regarding CAP, Supervising Practitioner/ Teacher Candidate Reception re the practicum, a Mentor workshop prior to the practicum, 1:1 and small group onsite mentoring in the partner schools.

Annual Goals - 2015
Goal #1 Expand range of diverse fieldwork opportunities
Goal #2 Align coursework with new professional teaching standards and new PPA
Goal #3 Implement grant funded ipad program with candidates

Progress Toward Goals - 2015
Goal #1 Students were offered the opportunity to participate in a Boston January urban internship. 1 teacher candidate was placed in Boston for the practicum. Several students completed prepracticum fieldwork at Head Start. Planning conversations occurred with an alum working NYC schools and with colleagues on Education Advisory group.
Goal #2 Our course catalog and syllabi include the new professional standards for teaching. Catalog and relevant syllabi updated with new professional standards for teachers. Professional Standards for Teachers were regularly addressed in curriculum classes and methods seminar. All teacher candidates were mentored regarding CAP as well as all Supervising Practitioners and Program Supervisors.
Goal #3 All Program Coordinators received ipads which were available for data collection and sharing with teaching candidates. Teaching with Technology workshops were offered to students in curriculum courses and during student teaching. Notebook software for Smartboard planning was added to library computers.
