Annual Goals

This report lists the annual improvement goals reported to ESE in the educator preparation program provider’s state annual report. Providers may report up to three goals for the upcoming year and are asked to report on progress made toward the prior year’s goals. Annual goals are reported in May of the academic year listed.

Annual Goals - 2017
Goal #1 Increase organizational support for effective preparation programs by appointing an Associate Dean of Education (July 2017). Among many roles, this administrator position will provide leadership for further implementing state regulations and developing the partnership with Boston Public Schools in the context of a global college of art and design.
Goal #2 Implement consistent and targeted ways to document and monitor student progress in studio and pedagogical practices through pre-practicum and practicum experiences.
Goal #3 Program an enhanced and effective training and support plan for Supervising Practitioners and Program Supervisors to impact candidate effectiveness as artist teachers.

Annual Goals - 2016
Goal #1 Engage with key issues addressed in the Memorandum of Understanding with Boston Public Schools. We will work with the relevant stakeholders to identify, plan, and implement action items.
Goal #2 Implement the state mandated Candidate Assessment of Performance during the practicum experience. To support this goal, we will further develop trainings for the associated personnel, including supervising practitioners, teacher candidates, and program supervisors.
Goal #3 Further integrate the Professional Standards for Teachers into the pedagogical courses in direct and indirect ways to support teacher candidate understanding and readiness.

Progress Toward Goals - 2016
Goal #1 To support our Memorandum of Understanding with Boston Public Schools, key stakeholders involved in the partnership now meet three times per year with individual project reporting at intervals between. Specific progress included reporting on our shared work to Boston Mayor's office, Americans for the Arts national education consortia, and our respective President and Superintendent and leadership offices. Current projects include expanding admissions opportunities for BPS students, co-planning student teaching supervision implementation, and documentation, and expanding youth programs and professional development opportunities.
Goal #2 To support the implementation of the Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP), MassArt has offered trainings for all Supervising Practitioners, Program Supervisors, and Teacher Candidates at the beginning of each semester (in large groups and individual meetings). Monthly training meetings for the Program Supervisors offered additional supports. The CAP manager attended two CAP workshops at DESE and shared information with the Program supervisors, Supervising Practitioners, and Teacher Candidates as appropriate.
Goal #3 We have further integrated the Professional Standards for Teachers into our pedagogical classes through using it as an evaluation tool in the Saturday Studios: Prepracticum 1 and 2 classes. In addition, we have outlined the integration of the PSTs in our self-study for formal review (Summer 2016).

Annual Goals - 2015
Goal #1 Begin to design the implementation of new mandates for the Professional Standards for Teachers. This goal will be further refined after the team completes the Alignment Working Group training this spring and designs our Implementation Plan. In essence, our plan is to prepare for the implementation of new curriculum designed specifically to address the PST mandates to insure the teaching readiness of our graduates.
Goal #2 Preparing for upcoming (2016-2017) program approval from our accreditors: NASAD, DESE, & NEASC. This work will involve the strategic implementation and documentation of our new PST alignment, as well as the enriched and formalized district relationship. We feel that our recent invigoration of our SEI preparation curriculum will also provide robust documentation of the excellence and adaptability of our program.
Goal #3 Begin to instantiate and document our district partnership with the Boston Public Schools. This will involve the documentation of deeper fieldwork encounters with in-district schools, formalized mentorship for our early-career graduates teaching in the district, and continued quarterly meetings among our department members and the arts leadership of the district.

Progress Toward Goals - 2015
Goal #1 To work toward implementing the new mandates for the Professional Standards for Teachers (PST), we have: - Attended PST focus groups and training sessions offered by DESE - Created a detailed curriculum map which outlines how our current courses address the PST and supports our preparations for our DESE Formal review (2016-2017). - Begun using the PSTs as a reflection and evaluation tool in the Saturday Studios: Prepracticum 2 course.
Goal #2 We have prepared extensive self-study and summative documents in preparation for our accreditors, including NASAD, NEASC, and DESE offsite and onsite formal review. These documents include rich qualitative and quantitative evidence, which highlights how we are preparing our candidates.
Goal #3 We have developed our district partnership with Boston Public Schools (BPS) through discussing, drafting, and signing a Memorandum of Understanding. Initial stakeholder meetings have been held and additional discussions are planned for the coming year. In addition, it continues to be a priority to partner with BPS teachers when placing our students for their pre-practicum and practicum fieldwork.
