Annual Goals

This report lists the annual improvement goals reported to ESE in the educator preparation program provider’s state annual report. Providers may report up to three goals for the upcoming year and are asked to report on progress made toward the prior year’s goals. Annual goals are reported in May of the academic year listed.

Annual Goals - 2017
Goal #1 Beginning in fall 2017, students will be placed in schools during the second semester of their second year. Historically, we have placed students in classrooms the first semester of their junior year.
Goal #2 We are initiating an outreach campaign aimed at attracting stufdents to the elementary education program. The Admissions Office is working with us to hone a message that will be sent out to over 200,000 families. In addtion, the College will be offering scholarships for entering elementary education students.
Goal #3 We are continuing to inform teachers we work with in the schools about the CAP. During the AY2017-18, we will introduce the CAP to 2 SPs who have yet to participate in the new process.

Annual Goals - 2016
Goal #1 We will introduce the new professional standards to all elementary education students, along with the CAP guidelines, in the Educational Psychology course in September, 2016. We will also view the videos offered by DESE so that students are knowledgeable about the multiple factors that frame their experiences as prospective teachers. We will initiate class discussions to examine students' questions, concerns, and comments and insure that we address them throughout their courses, pre-practicum, and practicum experiences.
Goal #2 As part of our PST implementation plan, we decided to plot a course-by-course analysis that that reflects the scaffolding of skills across the entire program. Now that the newly designed general education program of studies is up and running, we will complete our analysis and, if necessary, modify the course delivery schedule.
Goal #3 One of the schools we are partnered with is the Curley School. One of the classroom teachers is also an adjunct instructor in the elementary education program. She will be the first supervising practitioner to be using CAP with one of our full-time student teachers. We will meet with her and the candidate this spring before the student teaching begins. We will review the CAP and set up a schedule for the fall semester, 2016 when the practicum begins. Throughout the semester, the HC supervisor will audiotape all meetings with the candidate and the SP. We will review all the tapes throughout the semester, and at the completion of the student teaching experience. The goal is to gain a more expansive understanding of how the various actors are experiencing and interpreting the CAP. What is on paper does not always translate easily so we are hoping that the discussions will yield additional data that can assist us in improving the overall student teaching experience for all involved.

Progress Toward Goals - 2016
Goal #1 We reviewed the professional standards and read and discussed all the CAP documents in the Educational Psychology course.
Goal #2 We plotted a course-by-course analysis and decided to revise some of the course offerings. Beginning in the fall of 2017, students will enroll in their first education course during the first semester of their second year, as opposed to the second semester.
Goal #3 The teacher who agreed to be the SP to one of the HC students in her practicum was unable to do so. Another teacher at the Hennigan School, who has been a SP for us on numerous occasions, agreed to do so. We met with her, and the student, during the spring to insure that we understood the requirements that would be implemented when the student engaged her student teaching in the fall.

Annual Goals - 2015
Goal #1 We are going focus more on the MTEL in the Reflective Teaching course. As part of the course, students will be required to take a minimum of one section of the test.
Goal #2 Due to the timing of courses, and full-time student teaching during the final semester of senior year, elementary education students cannot participate in the Honors Program. This year, we are modifying the sequence of courses in the Honors Program and opening it to elementary education students.
Goal #3 Currently, the entire faculty voted to redesign the 4-year program of study for all HC students so that it is more consistent, addresses the needs of students, builds on pre-existing skills, and provides a solid foundation for all students in the college, regardless of major. We are implementing the redesigned program in September, 2015.

Progress Toward Goals - 2015
Goal #1 Each student enrolled in Reflective Teaching course was required to sit for one of the MTEL tests. The College provided the funding.
Goal #2 The Honor's Committee reworked the procedure for admittance to and completion of the Honors Program. One elementary education student was accepted into the program in September, 2015.
Goal #3 HC faculty implemented the newly designed program of studies for all students. The focus was streamlining the first 2 years of the general education courses so that there is more consistency, dependability, and skill-building across the curriculum. As part of the redesign, the elementary education program made changes in terms of when certain courses will be offered.
