Annual Goals

This report lists the annual improvement goals reported to ESE in the educator preparation program provider’s state annual report. Providers may report up to three goals for the upcoming year and are asked to report on progress made toward the prior year’s goals. Annual goals are reported in May of the academic year listed.

Annual Goals - 2016
Goal #1 In the upcoming year, we will increase the number of licensure candidates who come from partner schools outside of the Match Charter Public Schools.
Goal #2 As our teacher prep organization is currently in the process of applying for accreditation, our goal for this upcoming year is to successfully be through the eligibility phase.
Goal #3 In the coming year, we will increase retention of candidates of color through mentorship programs and specialized "residents of color" events.

Annual Goals - 2015
Goal #1 Increase by 25% the average number of practicum hours for Match Teacher Residents. We hope to do this by restructuring the resident's schedules and assigning them to a classroom earlier in the year.
Goal #2 We want to double the amount of time that Match Teacher Residents spend observing master teachers. We will do this by creating an hour a day of observation time in the resident's schedule as early as September.
Goal #3 Launch a pilot study of the efficacy of our teacher prep curriculum in partnership with Harvard's Center for Education Policy research. We are in the process of getting this off the ground for it's first year this summer.

Progress Toward Goals - 2015
Goal #1 We have met our goal #1 -- starting in the very beginning of the year, candidates were able to observe master teachers every single day, and eventually take over their classrooms for a chunk of the day for practicum.
Goal #2 We have succeeded in doubling the amount of time that candidates spend observing master teachers -- we instituted a "Golden Hour" in candidates' daily schedules, when they can spend an hour a day inside a master teacher's classroom starting from the very first day of school.
Goal #3 We successfully launched a pilot study of the efficacy of our teacher prep curriculum during the summer of 2015. 30 new first and second year teachers underwent an extensive 4-week training program prior to the start of their new teaching job.

Annual Goals - 2014
Goal #1 In the coming year, we are prioritizing opportunities to disseminate aspects of our work outside of the charter school sector which we have primarily served for the past 6 years. Our goal is to have at least one district and/or traditional education school partner for whom we will provide pre-service teacher training.
Goal #2 Better integration of Common Core tasks in all of our instructional methods courses. Instead of focusing on more general pedagogy, we will dedicate up to 25% of the time in our methods course to the intellectual work of preparation work of problem solving, close reading, and evidence based writing that the Common Core demands students to perform.
Goal #3 We will create a new, but required, independent study course that leverages technology to help our residents fill content gaps in light of the Common Core. We currently do not offer content courses, so we are working to identify online resources that could be leveraged to create personalized learning plans for each of our residents to improve the depth of their content knowledge.

Progress Toward Goals - 2014
Goal #1 We have succeeded in disseminating our training to non-charter partners through the Teacher Launch Project (listed as goal #3 for this upcoming year).
Goal #2 Our method specific courses now are completely integrated with the Common Core standards. We have re-written our course handbooks to use the language and structure of the Common Core. This includes the work of problem solving, close reading, and evidence based writing.
Goal #3 This year, we started a monthly course to dive deep into content. English residents join peers in a close reading and following discussion on novels that are typically taught in grades 6-12. Our math residents use that time to review content from Algebra I to PreCalculus. These classes focus on improving content knowledge in residents. We have also improved our reference list of online resources for additional content support.
