What else should you know about our school?
Students and staff at Norrback Avenue School continue forward with initiatives, based on grade level, district and statewide assessments, that are accelerating learning for all students. First, K-3 students are provided a comprehensive approach to reading through implementation to the Fundations Program. Reading instruction in Fundations occurs daily with additional "tier 2" instruction provided to students who require additional support and guidance. Second, K-6 grade teachers continue to implement the Reading Workshop Model on a daily basis. This method ensures students are provided targeted instruction on individualized levels with an in-depth approach to accelerating student's reading abilities through independent and guided approaches. Literacy assessment is a strength at Norrback as all students are given the BAS three times a year which provides teachers detailed information regarding students' approaches to reading, which in turn guides instruction. In the domain of mathematics, weekly grade level meetings target curriculum mapping and assessment outcomes as teachers review student work and guide small group instruction to bolster student learning. The new organization of our 5th/6th grade classrooms provides a looping model for all students with AVID utilized as an approach to reinforce organizational skills and collaborative methods among students. The revision of our special education model has ensured targeted services for students with fidelity to scheduling and communication among team members. As a result, student progress on state testing has moved forth for our children with special needs. Finally, family involvement continues to be a strength at Norrback as our PTO remains "strong" with evening activities as well as fundraising events that support field trips, guest speakers and needed materials.
